Private Prenatal Consultation
You have so many questions, right?! Well we have answers! We consistently hear “nobody ever told me or no one talks about…. Bottle-feeding Difficulties or Bottle Refusal
This consult is for babies with bottle-feeding difficulties, (choking, coughing, taking longer than 20 minutes to finish a bottle, excessive oral leakage when feeding, spitting up frequently during bottle feeds, arching/crying during feeds), or babies that are flat out refusing bottle feeds.
Have you tried offering baby a bottle and they just purse their lips turning away? Or maybe they are willing to play with the bottle teat in their mouth, chomping on it then tongue thrusting it out of the mouth without actually sucking on it? Do they take a few sucks and then push it out of their mouth and cry? This is not uncommon! Sometimes even babies that initially took bottles regularly in the first few weeks or even months of life begin to ‘refuse’ bottles later on!
In this 60-90 minute consult we will go over baby’s feeding history, do a weight check, an oral motor and structural assessment and a full feeding evaluation. Based on that information we will come up with a plan together to address the issues unique to your situation and get baby practicing bottle feeding skills right away. *Getting baby acclimated, or re-acclimated to bottle-feeding where they have been having difficulties typically takes a few weeks to tackle, over several appointments, in addition to at home exercises/bottle re-acclimation + practice.
Breast refusal or getting a bottle fed baby back to the breast (for infants up to one year)
This consult involves a comprehensive assessment aimed at addressing the challenges you and your baby are experiencing. We will begin by gathering detailed information about the baby's feeding history, including when the refusal started, any previous successful breastfeeding experiences, and any other relevant health issues. We will observe a breastfeeding session, measuring milk transfer, (and possibly a bottle-feed) to understand the dynamics between you and your and baby and to identify any potential issues while coming up with supportive methods to ease the transition back to the breast. This may involve but is not limited to; an infant oral exam and structural assessment of baby, flange fitting/pumping instruction/plan, providing guidance on proper formula prep as well as appropriate amounts per age/stage, if indicated, and scheduling additional consultations to monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed. Breast refusal is tough! We recognize the emotional toll that breastfeeding challenges can take and are here to provide education, guidance, encouragement and support. You will leave your appointment with a solid plan which we hope will help you to feel empowered and confident in your ability to nurture your baby! A physician's note will be sent to your baby’s pediatrician (and in some cases your OB, MW, or GP, if necessary) within 24 hours of your consultation.
Oral Motor Evaluation
Have you been told your baby has a tongue tie? A lip tie? Cheek ties, (wait what???) A high palate? A cleft palate? A small mouth? A short tongue? And that these variations in anatomical structures may be contributing to feeding issues you may be experiencing? Or that they definitely aren’t… but you have a hunch that they might be? During this 60 to 90 minute appointment we will go over baby’s feeding history, current feeding routine, any concerns you may have regarding feeding (and or lactation). We will also observe a feeding at breast and/or bottle, measuring intake if feeding at breast. Baby will receive a clinical oral motor and structural evaluation and we will come up with a specialized care plan to address any concerns while meeting your feeding goals which may include referrals to collaborative providers (SLP, PT, OT, ENT, or pediatric dentist).
